Case Management and Business Process Management - Apply CMMN successfully
Model, analyze, improve Business Processes with CMMN
Target Audience: Case Manager, Business Process Analysts, Business Analysts, Enterprise Architects, Business Architects, Business Process Manager
Course Type: Open Workshop, English, 2-Day-Workshop
Business Processes are an essential success factor for all enterprises. But not all processes are predictable at design time. The workshop gives you a start into how to model and analyze flexible Business Processes - or in short: It gives an introduction into "Business Case Management".
Business Processes are an essential success factor for all enterprises. Often Business Process Projects fall short of the expectations. One reason is the reduction to view the process flow as the single most important view for a process. These fixed logical process flows don't always exist. This is especially true for all service oriented processes. The OMG provided the standard "Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN)" as an important builidng block to fill the gap. The workshop introduces the basic principles and concepts, gives an deeper introduction into the standard and shows how to integrate Case Management into an Enterprise Architecture and an existing Business Process Management using real world examples.

Workshop BPM and Case Management: Understand and Apply CMMN
"Good" Business Processes are a critical success factor for many enterprises. Business Process Models are the basis to understand, analyze, optimize Business Processes or just to communicate the Business Process. To focus only on the activity flow of the Business Process using the OMG standard "Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN)" limits the success rate especially with regard to service oriented processes. The OMG provided with the standards BPMN, "Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN)" and "Decision Model and Notation (DMN)" important building blocks to describe non-predictable Business Processes. The workshop introduces the basic princples and concepts for Case Management and discusses the CMMN standard in detail. We use real life examples to illustrate the integration into Enterprise Architecture and the development method.
The workshop gives a jump-start into "Case Management" and offers practical insight. Participants are able to document, analyze, and optimize own Cases. They are aware of typical use cases for Case Management and know the standard notation CMMN. Focus is always the practical application of the concepts. Particiapnats are asked to bring own examples.
We use the Trisotech Modeler for practical exercices.
Content: BPM and Case Management: Understand and Apply CMMN
What is "Case Management"? What is the difference between a Case and a predictable Business Process? How do cases fit in the Enterprise Architecture?
We often us terms as "Case" or "Business Process" assuming that everybody involved has the same understanding of the term. In most cases this assumption is terribly wrong. First we clearify teh terms, concepts and relations between artefacts. We compare different definitions for "Case Management" from theory, standards and praxis to get a working definition for "Case". We show the relationships to classical Business Process Models, Business Logic, Decision Management and Requirements. Using the Zachman-Framework we illustrate the connections between Business Case Models and other artefacts in an Enterprise Model.
Case Managment Model and Notation (CMMN) - Describe Business Cases
Which notations and tools do we need to model a Business case? This parts introduces to the OMG standard "Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN)" nd discusses the elements we need to describe Cases from a business point of view.
How to develop a Case Management Model? - Introduction into a method
Very often users start to develop model in a intuitive way without defining an architecture and a method first. After some time the models become complex, are not manageable or maintainable. To avoid this pitfalls we need a systematic approach. This hasn't to be complicated.
This part of the workshop develops a pragmatic approach for development and analysis of Adaptice Case Models. Working techniques for structuring, scoping, decomposition of Business Cases are demonstrated using practical examples. We show and use available tools.
Methodology and Next Steps
Modeling and Analyizing Methods are not formally standardised. We present Best Practices and compare popular modelling methods. We show the strong connections between the standards "Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN)", "Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN)" and "Decision Model and Notation (DMN)".
